Meet the Quilts of Gee's Bend

Gee's Bend (Boykin) · Boykin
A Kick-It Pick
Non-negotiable
world-class art made for generations in one of the most isolated hamlets in Alabama. There's nothing else like it anywhere.

In an isolated bend of the Alabama River, the tiny Black community of Gee’s Bend has produced quilts so bold and original that the art world reeled when it noticed — improvised geometric masterpieces, sewn across generations by women in this remote hamlet, that now hang in the Smithsonian and have appeared on U.S. postage stamps. Cut off by the river and a discontinued ferry for decades, the isolation is part of what made the art so singular.

The move: Visit the quilting collective and, if you can, meet the quilters themselves — the work is stunning in person and the story is extraordinary. The restored ferry across the river from Camden is an experience in itself. Call ahead; this is a small community, not a theme park.
