A Kick-It Pick
Non-negotiable
a natural rock amphitheater with flawless acoustics and the Denver skyline behind the stage. See a show here once in your life; run the steps the morning after.

Fifteen miles west of Denver, two 300-foot sandstone monoliths lean together to form a natural amphitheater with perfect acoustics, and the result is the most beloved concert venue in America. Ship Rock and Creation Rock flank a bowl of about 9,500 seats cut into the red stone, with the lights of Denver glittering on the horizon behind the stage; every artist worth their salt wants to play here, and a night at Red Rocks is a genuine bucket-list experience. When there’s no show, it’s a free public park — people run the steps for a brutal workout, do sunrise yoga on the stage, and hike the trails through the red rock. The Beatles played here in 1964; the list since is basically the history of modern music.

The move: If you can line a trip up with a concert, do it — buy the second they go on sale and bring a layer, mountain nights get cold fast. No show? Come at sunrise, climb the amphitheater steps (locals use them as a stair-climber from hell), and walk the Trading Post Loop. Either way it's up at 6,400 feet, so pace yourself. Check the visitor center's music hall of fame while you're there.
