MerleFest Guide

April: Hear Doc Watson's Festival · Wilkesboro
A Kick-It Pick
Non-negotiable
the roots-music festival a legend built, on his home ground. Four days of the best pickers alive, in the foothills that raised the sound.

MerleFest is the big one — the Americana and roots festival that flatpicking legend Doc Watson started in 1988 on the campus of Wilkes Community College as a memorial to his son Merle, and grew into a four-day, thirteen-stage gathering that pulls 75,000 people to the foothills every April. This is “traditional plus” — bluegrass, old-time, blues, folk, and the songwriters who bend all of it — played on the ground where Doc Watson lived and picked. If you care about American string music at all, this is a pilgrimage.

When: four days over the last weekend of April — dates move; confirm at the MerleFest site.

The move: Buy the multi-day pass and camp; the late-night jams and the smaller stages are where the magic actually lives, not just the headliners. Find the Watson Stage for the marquee sets and the Cabin Stage between them so the music never fully stops.
