A Kick-It Pick
Non-negotiable
469 miles of billboard-free ridgeline built purely for the view, with Mabry Mill and the Peaks of Otter. Pick it up off Skyline Drive and just drive.

Where Skyline Drive ends at Rockfish Gap, the Blue Ridge Parkway picks up and runs 469 miles of ridgeline south into North Carolina — “America’s Favorite Drive,” a slow, commercial-traffic-free ribbon built for the view and nothing else. The Virginia stretch is the gentle, pastoral half: split-rail fences, the Peaks of Otter rising over a mountain lake, mountain-music heritage at the Blue Ridge Music Center, and Mabry Mill, the little water-powered gristmill that’s the most photographed spot on the entire parkway. There are no billboards, no stoplights, and no hurry — the speed limit is 45 and dropping is the whole idea.

The move: Pick up the parkway at Rockfish Gap straight off Skyline Drive for a seamless 105-plus-mile mountain run, stop at the Peaks of Otter and Mabry Mill (get the pancakes with the buckwheat), and pull off at the overlooks — the driving is the destination. Fall color is spectacular and crowded; late spring brings rhododendron. Watch for fog on the ridge and gas up before you climb; services are sparse.
