All Souls Procession Guide

Walk With the Dead Down the Street · Tucson
A Kick-It Pick
Non-negotiable
a whole city walking its dead through the streets by candlelight. Come to carry a name, not to take a photo. Then think about whose name you'd want carried.

Every November, tens of thousands of people walk through downtown Tucson carrying photos, urns, candles, and the names of everyone they’ve lost, in the All Souls Procession — a two-mile night parade begun by a local artist in 1990 to grieve her father, now one of the largest events of its kind in the country. It draws on Día de los Muertos traditions without pretending to be a party: painted skull faces, giant puppets, drummers, and a huge urn at the end where mourners burn written prayers and wishes for the dead. It is not a spectacle to be consumed. It’s a city grieving together, out loud, in the open.

The move: Come to participate, not to gawk — write the name of someone you've lost and carry it, or add a note to the urn that's burned at the finale. Walk the whole route with the procession rather than watching from the curb; the point is to be *in* it. Dress warm for a November desert night, and keep your camera respectful.
