Non-negotiable
a glowing slot canyon and a perfect river bend, minutes apart. Antelope is Navajo-owned and guided-only; book early, and let the guide run the show.

Two of the most photographed spots in the Southwest sit minutes apart outside the town of Page. Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon so narrow and deep that at midday, shafts of sunlight spear down through the top and set the swirling sandstone walls glowing orange and purple — it’s on Navajo land and can only be seen on a Navajo-guided tour, which is the rule and the point. A few miles away, Horseshoe Bend is exactly what it sounds like: the Colorado River carving a perfect 270-degree horseshoe a thousand feet below an overlook, one of the great cheap thrills in the state.

The move: Book Antelope well ahead (Upper Antelope has the famous light beams, best around midday late spring to early fall; Lower Antelope is a bit cheaper and less mobbed) — and go with the flow of the tour, because they're fast. Do Horseshoe Bend at sunset from the developed overlook ($10/vehicle), stay back from the unfenced edge, and bring water — it's a hot, exposed three-quarter-mile walk.
