Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim) Guide

Stand on the Edge of One of the Seven Wonders · Grand Canyon
A Kick-It Pick
Non-negotiable
one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and the single most humbling hour you can spend in this state. If you do nothing else in Arizona, do this.

It is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and no photograph, no drone shot, no IMAX film has ever prepared a single person for the first time they walk up to the rim and the ground simply ends — a mile deep, up to eighteen miles across, nearly 280 river miles long, with two billion years of the planet’s history stacked in colored bands down its walls. The Colorado River carved it, and it’s still carving. The South Rim is open year-round and holds the classic views; the North Rim is a thousand feet higher, closed in winter, and sees a tenth of the crowds — though a 2025 wildfire destroyed its historic lodge, so confirm what’s open before planning a North Rim trip. You will run out of adjectives. Everyone does.

The move: Get to the rim for sunrise or sunset — the low light rakes across the buttes and the whole canyon turns to fire; midday flattens it. Walk even a little way down the Bright Angel Trail to feel the scale from inside (turn around at the 1.5-mile resthouse unless you're prepared — the climb out is the killer). Skip the summer weekend crowds by riding the free shuttle and hitting the quieter Hermit Road overlooks.
