Superstition Mountains & Lost Dutchman State Park Guide

Hunt for Gold in the Mountains That Keep It · Apache Junction
A Kick-It Pick
Worth the drive
the best treasure legend in the Southwest, wrapped around a genuinely brutal, beautiful range. Go for the wildflowers, respect the wilderness, leave the gold to the ghosts.

The jagged volcanic wall of the Superstitions rises straight off the desert floor east of Phoenix, and it comes with the best treasure legend in America: the Lost Dutchman’s Mine, a supposed vein of gold that German prospector Jacob Waltz took to his grave in 1891. People have died looking for it — more than one — and the gold has never turned up. Lost Dutchman State Park sits at the base with the Superstition Wilderness climbing behind it, and the whole range glows like a struck match when the sun drops. In spring the foreground desert explodes with poppies and lupine.

The move: Hike the Siphon Draw Trail toward the Flatiron for the big payoff, or the easier Treasure Loop for the wildflowers and the postcard view of Superstition Mountain. Go at dawn in spring — the poppy bloom (late Feb into March) is short and the parking lot fills. Don't be the one who wanders off-trail into the wilderness chasing the mine with one water bottle; this range has killed hikers who took it lightly.
