Cumberland Island National Seashore Guide
Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island is reachable only by ferry, and that’s the whole point: no bridge, no cars for day-trippers, no crowds — just 17 miles of undeveloped beach, maritime forest, salt marsh, and a herd of wild feral horses wandering the dunes and the ruins. The Carnegie family owned most of it and left behind the roofless, ivy-choked shell of their Dungeness mansion, now grazed by those horses in a scene that looks staged and isn’t. It’s a National Seashore, day-use is capped, and it feels like the coast looked before anyone built anything.
