Worth the drive
the biggest, most jaw-dropping cavern in the East, with mirror pools and a stalactite organ that plays real music underground. Touristy and unforgettable.

Luray Caverns, discovered by lantern light in 1878 in the Shenandoah Valley, is the largest and most spectacular cave system in the eastern United States — cathedral-sized chambers of stone draped in columns, curtains, and mirror-still pools that double the formations perfectly (Dream Lake looks feet deep and is inches). The showpiece is the Great Stalacpipe Organ, billed as the world’s largest musical instrument: a console wired to rubber mallets that gently tap ancient stalactites across three-plus acres of the cave to play actual, eerie music underground. It’s touristy and it’s genuinely astonishing, and it’s the anchor of a valley full of caverns.

The move: Take the paved guided tour (it's easy walking, cool year-round at about 54°F, so bring a layer) and wait for the Stalacpipe Organ to play — that's the moment. It's popular, so go early or late to dodge the bus crowds. Pair it with Skyline Drive right above it, or the other valley caverns (Endless, Shenandoah, Grand). Yes, it's a tourist machine; it's also one of the great caves in America.
