Virginia Wine Country Review

Drink Jefferson's Dream, Finally Realized · Charlottesville
A Kick-It Pick
Worth the drive
the Piedmont wine country Jefferson dreamed of and couldn't grow, now genuinely good — Viognier and red barns under the Blue Ridge. Vindication in a glass.

Thomas Jefferson spent decades trying to grow European wine grapes at Monticello and failed every time — the vines died of disease and cold — but he’d be delighted now, because the foothills around Charlottesville have become genuinely good wine country. The Monticello AVA is the heart of it: hundreds of vineyards across Virginia, a signature grape in Viognier, and rolling Piedmont scenery of red barns and blue mountains that makes a tasting-room afternoon one of the best easy pleasures in the state. It’s not Napa, it doesn’t want to be, and it quietly makes some of the most interesting wine on the East Coast.

The move: Do a Monticello-area wine trail by car (have a designated driver) — hit a few tasting rooms with mountain views, try the Viognier and the reds, and pair it with a Monticello visit for the full Jefferson-vindication arc. Barboursville, with its ruined Jefferson-designed mansion, is a classic stop. Fall is gorgeous; go on a weekday to dodge the wedding-and-bachelorette crowds.
